The claim is based on the temperatures in the United States, not the global mean temperature. There has been a lot of excitement in blogland (1) (a strange place where normal rules do not apply and anything is true if said with enough conviction) about a slight anomaly in temprature data. In fact they have to cherry pick both a location (the U.S.) and a year (1934) to find data that is far from the global trend. Figure 2. Steve McIntyre noticed a strange discontinuity in US temperature data, occurring around January 2000.
Top 10 Warmest Years on Record Published: January 15th, 2020 The global numbers are in, and 2019 was the 2nd warmest year on record—wrapping up the hottest decade ever recorded . since the start of civilization. In 1934, at least, we were only measuring a tiny fraction of the total atmosphere. Globally, the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 are the hottest on record, so far. A slight adjustment to U.S. temperature records has bumped 1998 as the hottest year in the country's history and made the Dust Bowl year of 1934 the new record holder, according to NASA.
1934 - hottest year on record. To a large extent, this is still true today. The notion of "the hottest year on record" does not really mean that during that year there was more heat energy in our atmosphere than at any other time in the last 10,000 years, i.e. Until last week, the answer was supposed to be 2006, but it might have been 1998.
Depending where one looks, there are three different answers: 2006, 1998 or 1934. Choosing the year 1934 is an obvious example of "cherry-picking" a single fact that supports a claim, while ignoring the rest of the data. 1934 is the Hottest Year on Record Incorrect. McIntyre notified NASA which acknowledged the problem as an 'oversight' that would be fixed in the next data refresh. Which year is the hottest on record?
The hottest year on record is 1934, not 1998; The third hottest year on record was 1921, not 2006; Three of the five hottest years on record occurred before 1940; and Six of the top 10 hottest years occurred prior to 90 percent of the growth in greenhouse gas emissions during the last century. 1934 - the hottest year on record So what?
